Day by day

What happens, and when

  1. Day 1 Land, and drive up to Kandy 120 km · about 4 hours 30 minutes with the stops
    • Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage A sanctuary for rescued and orphaned elephants. Time it for the river bathing, which is the part everyone remembers.
    • A spice garden Cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and cloves growing, with a guided walk through how each is grown and used.
    • Gem museum Sri Lankan sapphires, rubies and topaz, and how they get from the ground to the window.
    • Kandyan dance show Drummers, costume and the fire-walking finish. An hour, in the evening, and better than it sounds on paper.

  2. Day 2 Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, the long way 85 km · about 2 hours of driving, most of a day with the stops
    • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic The most revered Buddhist site on the island and a UNESCO listing. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off.
    • Ramboda Falls viewpoint One of the tallest waterfalls in the country, seen from the road with tea all around it.
    • A working tea factory Leaf to cup, including the grading, and a pot of it at the end.
    • Shri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple A Ramayana site in the hills at Ramboda, and the best view of the central highlands on this stretch.

  3. Day 3 Nuwara Eliya, all day No long drive — everything today is local
    • Seetha Amman Temple Where the Ramayana places Sita's captivity. Small, bright, and beside a stream.
    • Hakgala Botanical Garden One of the oldest gardens on the island, and the Ashoka Vatika of the epic.
    • Gregory Lake Boats, bicycles and horses if you want them, and a walk round the water if you do not.
    • Victoria Park and the Pink Post Office The two things that earned this town the name "Little England", ten minutes apart.

  4. Day 4 Down to Colombo, and the city in an afternoon 190 km · about 5 hours 30 minutes
    • Pettah market and the Red Mosque The old bazaar, street by street and trade by trade, and the candy-striped Jami Ul-Alfar mosque in the middle of it.
    • Independence Memorial Hall The 1948 monument, in the Kandyan style, with gardens around it.
    • Galle Face Green and One Galle Face A half-kilometre of seafront the whole city walks at dusk, and the mall behind it if anyone wants air conditioning.
    • Lotus Tower and Gangaramaya Temple The tallest structure in South Asia for the view, and the least restrained temple in the country for everything else.

  5. Day 5 Colombo to the airport 35 km · about 45 minutes
    • Breakfast, check out, and the transfer Allow three hours before an international departure. Your driver will tell you when to leave; take his answer over the map application.

  • Four nights at the hotels named above, or a like-for-like alternative agreed with you first.
  • Breakfast and dinner every day.
  • A private air-conditioned vehicle for the whole trip, including both airport transfers.
  • An English-speaking driver-guide throughout.
  • Entrance fees at every site on the itinerary — Pinnawala, the Tooth Relic, the dance show, Gregory Lake, Victoria Park, Hakgala, the Lotus Tower and Gangaramaya.
  • All current Sri Lankan government taxes.

Not included

  • Flights. We will quote them separately from your city.
  • Your Sri Lanka entry permit — apply at eta.gov.lk before you fly.
  • Lunches, and anything you drink.
  • Travel insurance.
  • Tips, porterage and anything personal.
  • Camera and video permits at the sites that charge them.
  • Early check-in and late check-out.
  • Anything added to the itinerary once you are there.

When you can travel

These rates hold for arrivals between 1 June and 31 October 2026, booked by 30 June 2026. July and August are blacked out by the supplier and priced separately — ask and we will quote them.

What you travel in

One or two of you get a sedan. Three to five get a six-seat van, six to nine a ten-seat van. Private either way — no other passengers, and the vehicle is yours for the whole trip.

Cancelling

Free up to 21 days before you arrive. Inside 21 days, and for a no-show, the full amount is charged. Payment falls due before the free-cancellation window closes.

Rooms and timings

Check-in is 2pm and check-out 11am across Sri Lanka. Tell us about meal preferences, bedding or an occasion when you confirm rather than on arrival, and the order of the days may shift to fit your flights.
