Almaty in Four Nights — Medeu, Shymbulak and the Cable Cars

Four nights in Almaty with the mountains on two of them — the skating rink at Medeu, the cable car up to Shymbulak at 2,260 metres, and Kok-Tobe above the city. All meals, all transfers private, and three hours from Delhi.

Day by day

What happens, and when

  1. Day 1 Land at Almaty Airport to hotel — 15 km, about 30 minutes
    • Met at Almaty International Private transfer to the hotel. Nothing scheduled — the flight from Delhi is short but it usually lands late, and Kazakhstan is only thirty minutes behind India so there is no adjusting to do.
    • Dinner At an Indian restaurant in the city. Included, as every meal on this trip is.

    Night in Almaty.

  2. Day 2 Almaty, on foot and by car Local running, 2 to 3 hours of touring
    • Republic Square and the Independence Monument The civic centre of the city — the Presidential Palace, the Palace of the Republic and Abai Square within a few minutes of each other.
    • Panfilov Park and Zenkov Cathedral The oldest park in Almaty, and a Russian Orthodox cathedral of 1907 painted in sherbet colours — one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world, and it came through the 1911 earthquake that flattened the city around it.
    • Memorial of Glory and the Eternal Flame The war memorial in the same park, and a place local people still treat with some seriousness.
    • The rest of the day free Lunch and dinner are included and taken at Indian restaurants in the centre. The afternoon between them is yours.

    Second night in Almaty.

  3. Day 3 Up the gorge — Medeu and Shymbulak About 25 km each way, most of a day
    • Medeu skating rink At 1,691 metres in the gorge above the city, built in 1972 and still the highest-altitude Olympic-size rink in the world. More than a hundred world speed-skating records have been set on it, on meltwater ice off the mountain.
    • Shymbulak, by cable car The gondola climbs from Medeu to the ski resort at 2,260 metres, with lifts continuing to 3,163. The cable car fare is inside the package price. Summer or winter, the view back down the gorge is the reason to ride it.
    • A warm layer The top of the lift is routinely ten to fifteen degrees colder than the city, whatever the morning looked like. This is the day to have a jacket in the bag.

    Third night in Almaty.

  4. Day 4 Kok-Tobe, and the shopping Cable car from the city centre
    • Kok-Tobe by cable car A wooded hill on the southern edge of the city with a 372-metre television tower on it. Because the hill already stands at 1,100 metres, the tower reaches higher above sea level than almost any other on earth. The cable car up is included.
    • The top of the hill A small fairground, a Beatles statue and the best single view over Almaty. Late afternoon is the hour to be up there.
    • Shopping, and a free evening The guided shopping stop, then the rest of the day at your own pace. Lunch and dinner included as usual.

    Fourth night in Almaty.

  5. Day 5 Home from Almaty Hotel to airport — about 30 minutes
    • Breakfast and check-out Check-out is around noon, so a late-afternoon flight needs no day room.
    • Lunch, then the airport Included before the transfer. Tour ends here.

    Tour ends after the transfer.

The price

What is in it, and what is not

Included

  • Four nights at the hotel named above, on double sharing, or a like-for-like alternative agreed with you first.
  • Every meal — breakfast, lunch and dinner, all four days and lunch on the fifth. Taken at Indian restaurants in Almaty.
  • All transfers and touring on a private basis, including both airport transfers.
  • Almaty city tour, the Medeu and Shymbulak excursion, and Kok-Tobe.
  • Cable car fares at both Kok-Tobe and Shymbulak, and the Medeu entrance.
  • Bottled water in the hotel room.

Not included

  • Flights. Almaty is about three hours non-stop from Delhi with Air Astana and IndiGo; from anywhere else in India you connect through Delhi. We quote them separately.
  • Your Kazakhstan entry permit. The rule for Indian passports has changed more than once — we confirm what applies to your dates in writing before you pay.
  • A dedicated English-speaking guide for parties of fewer than eight. The supplier includes one from eight travellers up; below that you have an English-speaking driver. Ask and we will price a guide in.
  • GST and TCS, which are added at checkout and shown separately.
  • Travel insurance, which we strongly recommend for a trip with this much altitude in it.
  • Porterage, alcohol, and anything charged to the room.
  • Anything added to the itinerary once you are there.

Small print

Before you book

When you can travel

These rates were quoted on 8 August 2026 and hold to 30 November 2026. That covers the back half of the autumn — September and October are two of the best months in Almaty, and November is grey, cheap and before the lifts open. For December onwards, or for the ski season, ask and we will requote.

Rooms, and who this is priced for

The supplier quotes per person on double sharing only. There is no single-occupancy rate and no triple in this sheet, so a solo traveller or anyone wanting their own room is a separate quotation rather than a booking on this page. Tell us and we will get it priced.

Two rates are being reconfirmed

Three cells in the supplier’s sheet do not follow the volume-discount curve that every other cell on it follows, and one of them prices a group of eight higher than a couple. Rather than publish a number we cannot stand behind, those group sizes are simply not bookable on the affected hotels — Best Western and Rahat Palace are available at every size. They will open as soon as Tripstide confirms.

Altitude

The Shymbulak lifts reach 3,163 metres. That is high enough to leave a fit person breathless and to give anyone with a heart or lung condition a bad afternoon. Tell us at booking if it is a concern and we will reorder the days so the high one is not the first one.

Cancelling

Free up to 21 days before arrival. Inside 21 days, and for a no-show, the full amount is charged. Payment falls due before the free-cancellation window closes. Rates are subject to availability at the time of confirmation.

Rather talk it through first?

Book above if you are ready. If you would rather check something first — a different date, an extra night, a hotel you had in mind — tell us and we will put the exact price in writing before you pay anything.
